How to Get Your Colorado Home Ready for Interior Painting

Are you selling your Colorado home, or maybe you’re just ready for a change of color? Whatever the reason is, interior painting is a great way to update your home.

Whether you are going to attempt the feat yourself, or hire in the pros, understanding the preparation process is key for a successful experience. As a Denver interior painting company, we know how to navigate the Colorado landscape to deliver top quality interior and exterior jobs.

Run through the list below to make sure you understand the preparation process!

Get it Out!

Removing furniture may seem like an unnecessary step, but it is far from it! When a professional painter begins working on a job, they take all furniture out of the room, and what they can’t remove is moved to the center and covered.

It serves two purposes:

  • No tripping over or maneuvering around items
  • Your belongings stay paint-free

While we’re on the subject of removing items from the room that you are about to paint, let’s talk about wall decorations.

Yes, that means anything hanging on the walls like picture frames, posters, decorative items, and mounted televisions. You can paint around them, but chances are one or more of these items will shift or be bumped. Trust us; you DON’T want the embarrassment of a slightly crooked wall decoration with a mismatched wall color behind it!

Finally, remove outlet covers and light switch plates–it makes the job much easier!

Clean & Cover

Next, a painter should clean the walls that are about to be painted. Check for damages and holes that need to be filled as well.

Make sure that any oil stains and dark smudges are removed as these can affect the paint’s color. If these marks are giving you trouble, try a mixture of vinegar and water.

Even if your walls do not have any obvious marks or stains, it is still a good idea to go over them with a damp cloth or duster.

Once your walls have been repaired and cleaned, the floors need to be covered. Using a drop cloth isn’t something that only amateurs do–professional painters use them too. Mistakes and drips happen, and it is better to drip on a cloth than to ruin the carpet, tile, or hardwood floors!

Tape Away

It’s common knowledge that taping is often the least favorite part of interior painting. It’s certainly the most tedious! The taping process alone can be a great reason to hire the pros and not deal with all the detail.

Trim, baseboards, door frames, and windows all need to be covered. Basically, a good painter will tape off anything that cannot be removed that doesn’t need to be painted.

If you are considering painting your trim or crown molding at a later date, don’t worry extensively about perfection. However, be mindful of wasted paint and the time spent covering it as you plan your process.

Interior Painting: Mission Possible

There is more than just colors to think about when painting a room. If you want it to look clean and professional, you have to make sure the room is prepped properly.
